It was the wisdom of former US President Woodrow Wilson who after World War I realised this dream and created a new world order. He sliced the old empires and created new countries and Nations.
It was a folly of the British in 1947 by giving away their Indian colony to the Hindus who got India and Muslims who got Pakistan.
They could have easily carved national states for the Sikhs and others, specifically for Kashmiri’s and the North-East Tribals.
The Sikh state would have been a buffer between Islamic Pakistan, Hindu India and Communist China. Peace would have prevailed perennially a the time.
