To: The Editor,
The Tribune Group,
Please refer to your editorial ‘Truth behind Balakot’ published in your esteemed newspaper dated 11th March 2019. In this respect our party Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and I wish to state that a quasi-war has broken out between two countries-Hindu-India and Islamic-Pakistan. The media of both the countries is biased one way or the other. Your editorial obviously favours the former country.
The Sikhs are separate nation. Guru Nanak Sahib ordained that Sikhs are neither Hindus nor Muslims. Therefore we Sikhs cannot depend on either the Hindu or the Muslim media.
Hindu India states that it has downed a F-16 Fighter Aircraft of Islamic-Pakistan. We Sikhs who are neutral want to know where this aircraft crashed? Islamic-Pakistan states that it downed two fighter aircraft of Hindu-India. We know of one such aircraft whose pilot has been repatriated to this country. But Islamic-Pakistan must tell us where the other has crashed. According to the Geneva Conventions of War, prisoners of war are exchanged between two warring countries only when they sign the armistice. But Islamic-Pakistan sent back the pilot it had captured within three days of his captivity. This was a generous act.
We are sorry that since the two medias are in the grip of extreme nationalism, the impartial Sikhs would naturally look towards the International media for the truth.
Since your newspaper and some of us Sikhs have suffered the pangs of Partition and ethnic cleansing we would suggest and hope that your newspaper gives us a fair and unbiased view of events.
Simranjit Singh Mann,
Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)
