Riposte to Hindu Jingoism by Simranjit Singh Mann
The Editor, The Tribune,
Please refer to the article “The re-rise of Modi?” by Mr. Vivek Katju dated 18th March 2019, in your esteemed newspaper The Tribune.
My party the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and I wish to state that there maybe joy and jubilation in the minds of Hindutva about the Balakot IAF raid.
However, as a Sikh we feel that Mr. Modi with all his bravado could have drawn us Punjabis and Sikhs into a nuclear war. We would be in the front line of such a war as we inhabit the territories opposite to Pakistan, those being Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UT-Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Leh, Ladhak, Kutch in Gujarat.
In the event of a nuclear war we would as a people and civilisation be totally annihilated.
Secondly our fear is that Mr. Modi like Adolf Hitler has assumed all the executive and legislative powers with the fourth estate in ecstasy in his nationalistic forays into military adventures without procedural and constitutional controls.
In an excessively confrontational offensive venture as this, there is a constitutional provision that the Prime Minister must act only before taking his Cabinet members into confidence, especially his sub committee on security.
Since Mr. Modi is in alliance and coalition with the Badal Akali Dal a quasi Sikh political party, it was incumbent on him to have a Sikh Cabinet Minister participating in this uncalled for misadventure.
The consequences of not having a Sikh Cabinet colleague participating into the decision of this attack, deep into Pakistan, would mean that the Sikhs have no option but to state that without representation in a decision which would have grave consequences on our very existence on earth, we are in no legal or constitutional bind to fight a war where we have no representation in the decision. As such our party had advised Sikhs not to participate in such a war. We opt out of it.
During World War II Adolf Hitler who had a magnificent record of gallantry in World War I, having won an Iron Cross but could go no higher than a Corporal in the army. Having taken overall control of the war in 1939 Hitler assumed complete control over his professional armed forces and even overruled his Chief of Staff in strategic decisions.
In Operation Barbarossa Field Marshal Guderian wanted to stall the Operation due to the extreme cold of the Russian winter. But Hitler overruled him which led to drastic consequences to the German war effort.
Similarly we feel Mr. Modi has taken over all command of his military and decides strategic military matters.
As such as the Sikhs are concerned no matter how much Hindu nationalism he aspires in his people, we Sikhs do not wish to follow a man like Adolf Hitler who will lead his country into disaster, as his military machine has archaic weapons and Mr. Modi’s country is surrounded by nuclear weapon states.
We are sorry Mr. Modi has aroused a sprit of Jingoism in Mr. Katju the author and your worthy newspaper.
As a tailpiece we must state that the Balakot raid is stated to have killed 300 terrorists. The forces of Hindutva are happy not that such a large number of terrorists have been killed but happy that a large number of Muslims have been done to death.
Mr. Modi and the country he presides over is now sick and morbid.
Simranjit Singh Mann,
Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)
