To:       The Editor,

            The Tribune,

Please refer to your editorial dated 12th October 2017 of your esteemed newspaper entitled “An unworthy act”. My party Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and I are of the opinion that this editorial is biased against the Sikh people. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) states that The Tribune is an old newspaper of the Punjab which was founded by a Sikh philanthropist Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia in the 19th century at Lahore which has always been the political capital city of the Punjab, but now after 1947 has fallen into the territory of Islamic Pakistan. There is a saying amongst the Sikhs that those who have not seen Lahore have not taken birth. For the Sikhs we never see it as Islamic Pakistan but THIS (Theocratic Hindu Indian State) has built a barbed wire fencing on the Punjab-Pakistan border which runs 560 kms along our borders. The wire is electrified and patrolled by radicalized Hindu para-military constables recruited for the Border Security Force who shoot at sight any person they see in the vicinity of the fencing. The Sikhs want this fence to be torn down as most of their precious and holy Gurdwara’s lie in Islamic Pakistan. But since the Sikhs, a stateless people, we at the moment have no option but to follow the dictates of the Hindu and Islamic states.

Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia the founder of The Tribune in his middle age fell into the hands of Hindu right wing fanatics known as the Arya Samaj who converted this Sikh aristocrat and philanthropist into their Hindu Arya Samaj religion. Sardar Majithia created a trust which came to be managed by the Arya Samaji Hindus in which The Tribune was the major beneficiary. Since then The Tribune has been a strong Sikh baiter and loses no opportunity in denigrating and abusing the Sikhs.

It has been a God sent opportunity for The Tribune (dated 12th October 2017) to be abusive of the great Sikh leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala who did not let the combined armies of the Hindu state, the Soviets and Great Britain enter the holy precincts of the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar in 1984, armed with tanks, heavy artillery, mortars, navy divers, special forces and helicopter gunships, defended the sacred premises of the Sikhs for 72 hours and in the end fell to the combined forces bullets collecting 76 of them on his chest and with his scalp chipped. He died a martyr defending the Sikhs most sacred holy shrine. Earlier Baba Deep Singh had defended the holy Darbar Sahib against the pillaging Afghan marauder Ahmed Shah Abdali in 1762. Baba Deep Singh had also fallen a martyr defending these most holy and sacred precincts.

Because Kuldip Nayar has been a journalist it has given an excuse for The Tribune to come out in his aid although the motive has been, as always, to attack the Sikhs. I have seen with my own eyes Kuldip Nayar accepting a big purse from the SGPC and whatever title they may have bestowed on him. The traditional Akali leader Parkash Singh Badal who has always kowtowed to the Hindu state, has been paying Nayar a hefty amount of money every month from the treasury of the SGPC and has been doing so for years and years. Kuldip Nayar along with former Hindu Premier Inder Gugral and some other Punjabi Hindus has been lobbying for these traditional Sikhs with the hard headed Hindu leaders that hold power in Delhi urging them that though Badal may be a Sikh but he in fact will not lead a Khalistan movement, though Badal in 1992 signed a memorandum to Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali seeking UN intervention for the creation of an independent and sovereign Sikh state, which would be a buffer between Islamic Pakistan, Communist China and THIS (Theocratic Hindu Indian State), all armed with deadly nuclear weapons and perpetually at one another’s throats. I possess this signed memorandum of Mr. Badal.

Kuldip Nayar had good relations with the Sikhs. His mother was a pious Sikh. But then Nayar married the daughter of Bhem Sen Sacher who became the Chief Minister of the Punjab after 1947. Sacher had great respect for the Sikhs. But after 1947 when the Hindus got their Hindu majority state- THIS, they immediately became bigoted, arrogant, ultra Hindu nationalists and jingoistic. Sacher lost his liberalism and his liking for the Sikhs and had the Punjab Police march into the holy precincts of the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). It must be remembered that any armed state aggression into the Darbar Sahib is like a red rag being shown to a bull, as far as the Sikhs are concerned. Kuldip Nayar being the son-in-law of this Chief Minister naturally fell into the club of the neo fanatic nationalist Hindus.

We want to make it very clear that the allegation Kuldip Nayar has been making against the Sikh martyr Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala that he was a stooge of the ruling Congress party under Indra Gandhi and this very tale which is carried by The Tribune is totally and absolutely a cock and bull story. I was an Indian Police Service officer in those days and have first hand knowledge that the Sant was nobody’s fool. If he had links with the Hindu Indian state he would not have fought and died for an independent and sovereign Sikh state. I had the opportunity of introducing Maharaja Amarinder Singh who was a Congress party member of parliament then to Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawla. Amarinder Singh was then feeling out the aim and national destination of the Sant. It was a probing mission as I understood it and nothing else. I presumed that he would report his talks with the Sant to Rajiv Gandhi and Indra Gandhi. As I was present the Sant did not show any submission or genuflection to the Hindu Indian state and was determined to fight for his mission to the end. Therefore these stories put out by Hindu journalists and The Tribune who were feeding on the crumbs of the SGPC are Hindu nationalist stories to demean the Sikhs and their heroic history.

The Tribune along with the right wing Hindu newspapers The Hindustan Times, Times of India and The Indian Express are totally responsible for creating an unforgivable enmity with the Sikh nation and these very newspapers egged on the Hindu state and Indra Gandhi backed by the BJP, Lok Dal, CPI and CPM and other rabid Hindu political parties to lay siege and aggression to the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in 1984 in an ingress code named Operation Blue Star.

Now in the garb of supporting a yellow press journalist Kuldip Nayar The Tribune has unleashed its Sikh baiting once again and this time our party appeals to The Tribune to publish our rebuttal as a whole. We also seek a meeting with the editor in chief Mr. Harish Khare for our delegation to meet him and to put the Sikh point of view before him and his Trust. We look forward to seeing Mr. Khare.

Thanking you,

Yours Faithfully,

Simranjit Singh Mann,
