The Editor, The Tribune,
Please refer to the news item entitled-“Maha says no to separate Lingayat religion” of your newspaper dated 14th July 2018.
In this respect Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) states that how can the right wing ultra nationalist Hindu government of Maharashtra absorb the separate Lingayat religion into its omnivorous Hindu belly when in the 1931 census the Lingayats had an nomenclature of an independent and separate religion.
In 1941 India was fighting in the World War II and thus in that year the census was not taken. When in 1951 the census was taken then the present Hindu Indian State had come into being. The Lingayats like the Sikh’s were absorbed into the Hindu religion.
The Sikh’s have been protesting this injustice ever since 1947 and now the Lingayats have also realised that a grave injustice has been done to them. This is how a so called secular Indian state has been turned into a despotic, irrational Hindu Rashtra. We protest.
In recent years some fanatic right wing Hindus have been killing Lingayats, especially a lady journalist of Bangalore and another male Lingayat intellect. These murders have taken place because the Lingayats want to establish their independent and separate religious identity.
The Minority Commission must also correct its mistake in clubbing the Lingayats with the Hindu religion.
